There is mercy, there is extravagant mercy, and there is New
Testament mercy.
When a little offense is committed judging from the eyes of
men, an ordinary mercy is required for such an individual to be forgiven. But,
when the offense is a big one like killing, robbery and such like, it takes an
extraordinary mercy for the person to be pardoned.
However, if there is a means by which we can offend God in a
big form, it is by unbelief and doubt. Hebrew 11:6 says, “But without faith it is impossible to
please God”. This simply means, without faith, we can not make God happy,
we can not get His attention and we will not be able to interact with Him.
Taking a look at the incident in 2 Kings 7:1-20 for instance; God was about to reverse the famine in
Samaria, then
He spoke through Elisha that there would be a drastic change in 24 hours. The
minister of economy in that nation took a study within himself regarding his
vast knowledge in economy, and then he said it is not possible. Honestly speaking,
it is very dangerous to fall into the hand of God. He doubted the word of God
and this led to his untimely death.
But, when God told Abraham in Genesis18:9-12 about the fulfilment of His word on the promised
child, Sarah overheard the Lord from behind; she doubted and even laughed God
to scorn. Yet, God handled it differently. Nevertheless, she got away with it
but, for the extravagant mercy of God.
Instead of judgment like in the case of the minister of
economy in Samaria,
Sarah was preserved to witness and enjoy God’s promise.
This is an extraordinary mercy of God.
Unbelief denied and hindered million of Jews access to the Promised
Land. The same could have hindered Sarah but for the mercy of God. She entered
her promised land.
The law demands that man be put to death when sin is
committed but mercy says no and imparts life to man even when the same law is
violated.
What Sarah enjoyed was the extravagant mercy of God and the
same is still available
today only if we believe in the name of Jesus.
