Reading through the account of a servant praying to God of his master in
Genesis 24:12-14 is such an inspiring adventure which gives me a deep insight
and concise effort to copy and make the prayer point a task.
How could I have missed such a wonderful revelation, I asked myself because I have read this particular portion of the bible severally and it never occurred
to me to find out what the servant was actually saying. The prayer goes thus;
"O LORD God of my master Abraham, I pray thee, send me good speed this
day, and shew kindness unto my master Abraham".
What a simple prayer with so much effective content. By the way, did you
actually see anything in this prayer that could be a topic for discussion? Yes,
of course, what did he mean when he said "good speed"? I may not
actually know how to define that in one sentence. However, here are few of what
was revealed as I meditate on this word;
- TIMELY ANSWERS TO PRAYERS: Genesis 24:15, "And it came
to pass before he had done speaking, that, behold, Rebekah, came out, who was
born to Bethuel, son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham's brother, with her
pitcher upon her shoulder". Before the young man could stand up after he had finished praying, the
answer came knocking on his door. Would you want speedy and timely answer to
your prayers this year? Ask for good speed.
- DIVINE INTERVENTION: It would have been a daunting task for this young man to locate Abraham's
kindred according to the oath he took with his master but for God's
intervention. Genesis 24:3-4, "And I will
make thee swear by the LORD, the God of heaven, and the God of the earth, that
thou shalt not take a wife unto my son of the daughters of the Canaanites,
among whom I dwell: But thou shalt go unto my country, and to my kindred, and
take a wife unto my son Isaac" The divine intervention of God did not even allow him to search before he
located what he was looking for. The first person he saw was the person he had
come to find. Would you like to find without search, all your heart desire this year? Ask
for good speed.
- FAVOUR INSTEAD OF LABOUR: Proverbs 13:15, "Good
understanding giveth favour: but the way of transgressors is hard" It is indeed a requirement to labour in order to have a reward. However, there
are different kinds of labour. There is that which is regarded as hard labour
which has in similitude a form of punishment. This is mostly experienced when
the methodology applied to get a job done is ineffective. But, there is
another form of labour that does not require much human input but is already
programmed to work seamlessly to deliver and to make the work less stressful.
The only labour involved is just your presence. There is a programmed and
seamless methodology that delivers without stress every task when the divinity
is called upon. It would have been hard labour locating Rebekah among a multitude of young ladies in that nation, but the servant understood this and
he called upon the God of his master to show him favour instead of labour. You
will agree with me that this man did not labour at all and the task was a
success. The journey has already started and the task abound, would you like to
journey in favour instead of labour this year? Ask for good speed.
- FULFILMENT AND REALIZATION OF DREAMS, HOPE AND EXPECTATIONS: Psalms 145:19, "He will
fulfil the desire of them that fear him: he also will hear their cry, and will
save them" Assuming the task given to this servant was an ordinary task, there would be
no reason to take an oath. But, for the importance and expectation of
Abraham regarding the said assignment, oath became a necessity. Abraham had an
obligation to fulfil the commandment of God by making sure that his son did
not marry outside the specified terrain. However, he is of age and could no
longer carry out the assignment by himself; therefore his servant had to pledge
that he would do the task accordingly. Now, there was an expectation and there was a promise to fulfil. How would
this go as planned? The servant looked up to God and asks for good speed which
can be interpreted as fulfilment and realization of dream, hope and
expectation of Abraham towards the promise that was made to him by his servant.
In the end, the expectation was indeed realized and the promise was also
fulfilled, all powered by the God of Abraham. Would you like to have all your expectations realized and all your promises
fulfilled this year? Ask for good speed.
- GOD SPEED: The word 'good' I believe was coined from God. One thing I know of truth is
that when it is good, it is God. Even at creation, after God finished the work
of creation, He looked at it and saw that it was very good. Genesis 1:31, "And God saw
everything that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening
and the morning were the sixth days" Everything about God is absolutely good. The servant actually asked
for good speed, probably he lacked the boldness to ask for God speed. There is
a God speed that supersedes every other speed in life and that is what I'm
asking for. Regardless of how fast anybody can run, you cannot outrun God for
He is omnipresent. It does not matter how smart anybody can be, you cannot
outsmart God for He is a perfect God. Even if you are as wise, full of
knowledge and understanding as King Solomon, you need to know that Solomon's
wisdom is just a gift out of many from God. God speed makes you to outsmart,
outrun, outstand and appear the best among all your competitors. God speed was actualized in reality when Elijah prayed on Mount Carmel after
his encounter with the prophet of Baal. While the rain was about to start,
Elijah hastened King Ahab to leave the scene and ride on his horse while he
walk on foot to Jezreel before the rain would catch up on them. But, to our
amazement, Elijah got to Jezreel before the king rode on a horse. How did
it happen? The answer is inexplicable but the bible says, the hand of the Lord
was upon Elijah and he got to Jezreel before Ahab. This is God speed at work. 1 Kings 18:44-46, "And
it came to pass at the seventh time, that he said, Behold, there ariseth a
little cloud out of the sea, like a man's hand. And he said, Go up, say unto
Ahab, Prepare thy chariot, and get thee down, that the rain stops thee not. And it came to pass in the meanwhile, that the heaven was black with clouds
and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode and went to Jezreel. And the hand of the LORD was on Elijah, and he girded up his loins, and ran
before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel" I bet you need God speed in all your endeavour this year, therefore you must
ask for God speed.
